Hair Removal

Hair removal by IPL:

The intense pulsed light is absorbed by the melanin in hair (which gives hair its colour) changing it to heat energy. This heat is transferred to the growth cells at the bulb/ base of the hair, permanently disabling them providing they are in an active stage of hair growth (anagen stage). The intense pulse light has no affect on hair in the catagen and telogen phases.

What are the side effects of IPL hair removal treatments?

IPL does not work on all hair colours and skin types. Grey or white hairs are not always suitable for this type of treatment, as they usually do not contain sufficient melanin to absorb light. You may need 4-6 treatments before you can see a difference, although individual results can vary some being quicker than others. Immediately after IPL you may notice a slight reddening of the skin around the hair follicles or slight local swelling which may last for up to a few hours (or in very rare cases, a few days.) These are positive indications that the IPL was effective and no cause for concern.

Why is my hair still growing?

This is a common question for new users of intense pulsed light systems. The body requires time to shed the hair which had been thermally destroyed. It may take 8-10 days on some people and perhaps 2-3 weeks on others to fully shed the thermally damaged hair. Even though it appears as though the hair continues to grow, it is actually the body shedding the hair entirely, and over time the treated hair will grow out of the skin. This should not be mistaken for continued hair growth.

Preparation for IPL treatment:

Ideally pre-shave the treatment area for hair removal. Discontinue sunbed use and spray tans for at least 4 weeks prior to treatment.

Do not wax or tweeze hair removal area .Shaving between hair removal is important ensuring the hair is 2- 3 days growth
